Do you like the sound of flowing water or even rain? The sound can invite peace and calm. There are even apps like YouTube and Calm that offer videos of water sounds to aid in sleep and relaxation. Quietness and the sound of water are a perfect combination for reading and meditating on God’s Word. If you’re stressed, need answers, or want to relax, try water and the Word.

The Story: Psalm 23

In Psalm 23, David revealed one of his conversations with the Lord. He began by declaring that the Lord is his shepherd, so he had everything he needed. God allowed him to rest in the green grass and led him beside still water, which renewed his strength. Because of God’s name, He led David down the right paths. Although some of the paths were dark, David wouldn’t fear because the Lord was with him. God’s rod and staff protected and comforted him. He prepared a table before David in the presence of his enemies and anointed his head with oil, resulting in an overflow of blessings. Therefore, God’s goodness and mercy would follow David all his life, and he would dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

The Lesson

These verses convey the water and the Word. David articulated that the Lord is with him as his shepherd. Through this role, the Lord led and guided him in the right direction. Every place he traveled wasn’t perfect, but David knew he had God’s protection and support. God also led him by peaceful waters for restoration of his soul. The Lord’s presence gave David assurance that they would never part ways.

As believers in Jesus, we have the same assurance that David had with the water and the Word. John 1:1, 14 tells us that the Word was with God at the beginning and was God. The Word also became flesh and dwelt among people. The Word is Jesus, who invites us to come and fill our thirst through Him (John 7:38). The thirst quencher is water, and Jesus is the water for our spirits. When we partake in the water and the Word, we find rest for our souls.

If we aren’t believers in Jesus, the water and the Word are still available. Jesus provides an open invitation to come and drink. John 4:13-14 showcases Jesus offering water to an unbeliever because His water is life-changing. Will you take a drink from the water and the Word?
