Better Way
Have you heard “Your Way’s Better” by Forrest Frank? In the chorus of this song, he acknowledges that he needs Jesus now more than ever. He needs Him to put his heart back together. After searching the world till his head hurt, he discovered that the way of Jesus is better. From this song and the Bible, we learn that there’s a better way. We tried our way and that of people, but there’s still a better way.
The Story: 1 Samuel 17:32-40
In 1 Samuel 17:32-40, David told Saul not to worry about the Philistine because he would fight for Saul. Saul thought the idea was preposterous because David couldn’t fight the Philistine and win. While David was a child, Goliath had been a man of war since his youth. Yet, David persisted in his declaration. He informed Saul that he’s been taking care of his father’s sheep and goats. When a lion or bear came to steal from the flock, David went after the thief with a club and rescued the animal from the captor’s mouth. If the animal turned on David, he clubbed it to death. Therefore, he would do the same to Philistine because he defied the armies of the living God. David declared that the God who rescued him from the lion and the bear would surely rescue him from the Philistine.
Following David’s argument, Saul relented, agreed, and prayed that the Lord would go with David. Saul then gave David his armor, which David put on. After walking around in the armor, David said that he couldn’t use it. He hadn’t worn one before and wasn’t accustomed to it. As a result, he took it off and picked up five smooth stones from the stream. He headed to the battleground with his staff and a sling.
The Lesson
These verses reveal that there’s a better way. Although Saul didn’t want David to fight Goliath, he couldn’t overcome David’s compelling argument. He then decided that he didn’t want David to go to battle unprepared. There was no time to teach him the rules of engagement, so he gave him his armor. Although David tried it on, he knew there was a better way. David killed a lion and a bear with God, and He would do the same thing to the Philistine.
Like David, have we discovered the better way? We tried things in our own strength and had some success. We even followed the opinions of others and had some forward movement. But there’s still a better way, which is God’s way through Jesus. There are things we don’t know and can’t see, but that changes when we follow His way. No, we don’t get all the answers. Instead, we get the One who is the answer. Why memorize the answers to the test when the Teacher is taking the test with you?
The better way is Jesus.
